Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine BETA Impression
The MegaTen series have been pretty much unknown to me aside from playing a bit of Persona 3 and seeing Digital Devil Saga games at my friends house. With their MMO in beta in US, I thought I might give it a try and I must say I have both likes and dislikes on the game. Though I’m not much of an MMO-er, I do sometimes find an MMO to keep myself occupied for a week or so.
After playing for about a week and getting to know most of the stuff in this game I can definitely say that it is not an MMO for everyone. The playing of it is pretty simple and follows the basic format of any MMO, but with that also comes with cons from either how things were done or just poor implementation of something.
Pros:
-10 Different sets of hotkeys: With any MMO, hotkeys is a very important thing. Especially when it comes down to using skills and items. Using the keys F1-F12 and also 1-= or some symbol, you have a pretty large amount of stuff you can set to them and with 10 possible presets, one can easily make it so that one is specifically for items while the other is for spells and attacks. Easily switch between them with the up and down arrow makes it fast and easy.
-Follow Target/Auto Walk: This allows you to follow someone or walk straight without actually having to press down W or click around all the time. Option gives you freedom to take breaks or just relieve stress on your hands while you follow someone to a specific place.
-Dungeons are created. Allows Solo or Party only runs: This is actually a really great thing. Many times have I played an MMO where I found myself trying to do a dungeon run and I get a lot of kill stealing from other players. In this game, you can enter a dungeon either by yourself with possible interference of other players or can do a party run. This really helps when one needs to get experience.
Cons:
-Walking speed: My god…The walking speed is god awful in this game. Without mounting onto your demon or speed orbs, you will find yourself walking across two entire fields to get to a place. Keep in mind that it is possible that you get attacked and die on your way to your location.
-No quick travel/teleport: At a dungeon and you want to return to the town? Well, unless you’ve set your home point to that town and have a stone or yarn to travel with, you’re going to have to walk all the way back to town. This makes getting between spots really really difficult.
-Normal attacking are skills: Though we start the game off with both the ability to wield a sword and use a gun, the attacks are separate skills. You will constantly find yourself mashing the attack hotkey (whatever you set it as) or clicking until you attack. Also, unlike most MMOs I’ve played, you’re slash or shoot attacks (which are your basic attacks) are skills rather than some other thing. As in, you will need to find it in your skill list and set a hotkey for if you don’t then you might as well not attack anything.
Overall, considering it IS a beta, I’ll give it some slack. Aside from the cons, it really isn’t THAT bad of a game if you can get over the slow walking speed. Then again, with like many other MMOs I have played, my enjoyment for this will probably only last another few days before I go on to something new again.
