Quick Lagann-Hen Review

Hey everyone, as the title implies, I will be doing a very short and very quick review of Lagann-Hen with very little to no screenshots. Why? Because I’m afraid of spoiling and also because I don’t think I can capture the essence of the 2nd movie with just words.

So, as some of you may or may not have remembered a post I did awhile (long while) back on the first movie. The first movie was easier due to the fact that not many things were changed, while in the 2nd movie, a lot was changed, while retaining only very basic stuff. I’ll go list all the differences that are important without spoiling.

-Fight with Lord Genome was basically completely omitted. Just a few scenes here and there, but the movie practically starts off at the end of the battle and moves on with a time-shift montage.

-Reason for Anti-Spiral appearance. Along with the Anti-Spiral attacking.

-Some of the scenes during battle/how they enter battle.

-The whole last battle. ‘Nuff said.

The movie itself retained very little clips from the TV. I’ve noticed clips here and there, but overall, it was mostly reanimated. Some of you may be asking why they should rewatch it if it’s just a retelling of the original. Reason why is because THIS VERSION COMPLETELY SHATTERS THE ORIGINAL TV VERSION. Some of you may remember the first movie being the TV completely compressed into a movie format with a change in the ending. In this, they do a whole lot better job at getting straight to the point and giving us what we want, which is of course men screaming as if they’re about to shit a house. Also because of Yoko and Nia tits. I think reason being is that in the first half of the series, not much was really important. Most important was the general battles and Kamina’s death, but nothing from that was reanimated, except for the general battles which was combined as one giant battle in the end.

This adaption really did progress to the end in an uphill of action. At first it may seem somewhat slow, but its only to get some character development out of the way. Once the action starts, it just continues to reach the top climax of the ending. The ending was changed almost completely and only retained SOME of its TV scenes, but even then the whole battle was completely altered. To sum it up, it was a lot more epic.

I highly doubt this, but if you or someone else are not familiar with the Gurren Lagann series, I’d recommend watching the movie over the TV series. Now, don’t get me wrong. The TV series was great on its own, but for instant gratification, the movie will get the job done. It is quite nice though to go through the TV series first then watch the movie to see differences. Especially in Lagann-hen. I can not stress this enough. Lagann-Hen was by far the greatest comeback from a decently-shitty first movie.

So, overall what do I think of the movie? I think its more than good enough to deserve a watch. Definitely watch it if you are into super robot/mecha stuff or just plan obscurity and awesome.
