Okamikakushi Anime Announced

Submitted by Suzuku on August 25, 2009 – 1:38 am3 Comments

From the game designer that brought you the “When They Cry” series of Visual Novels, Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Ryukishi07,  comes a third series of mystery murders being turned into an anime. This time it is named “Okami Kakushi”. More after the break. :D

“The TBS Anime Festa 2009 event has announced on Saturday that a television anime adaptation of Konami’s Ōkamikakushi adventure game for the Sony PSP console has been green-lit. The mystery game features creator and director Ryukishi07 (When They Cry – Higurashi, Umineko no Naku Koro ni) and the character designer duo Peach-Pit (Rozen Maiden, Shugo Chara!, DearS). No details about the anime version have been announced yet.”

So from what I can gather, the game was released on August 20th and an anime deal was worked out during the game’s production. No info has been given on when the anime will air or what studio will be animating it, but my bet is that it will probably air the 201o Spring Season, when Umineko has ended,  and will be animated by Studio DEEN as per usual with Ryukishi07’s work.

If it turns out that DEEN will be the animators, then I have mixed feelings. On one hand, if they put Okami high on their priority list then at the very least the animation quality will be as good as Umineko’s, which is one of their more well produced series. On the other hand, they’re known for making horrible adaptations. I guess I’ll leave the prosecuting for when the anime has actually aired, but if the past is anything to go by then I’d rather watch the anime before playing the game. :/

Actually, looking at projections, Umineko season 1 will probably end around late November.

As far as Okamikakushi goes it’s definietly exciting, although I doubt they’ll do it by Spring 2010. The game just came out, and most animes take a good year to have a season produced. Next year around the summer season sounds more reasonable, in my opinion.

DEEN can be a good studio…when it wants to be that is. They have certainly improved since Higurashi season 1 and I think so far they are handling Umineko well (adaptation wise, barely any scenes have been cut and most have only been shortened). Hetalia, which is also done by them, is also a popular show and is doing well for itself. Although it’s obvious between Umineko and Hetalia which one DEEN favors more.

I’ll probably end up playing the game, but then again I don’t understand much Japanese so I might just end up waiting for the anime.
